In the Late Song Dynasty (960-1279) and early Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368), there was then a huge rock with a natural cavern on the beach, which sounded like drums thundering when sea waves lashed against it. The rock was therefore named "Gulang Shi", meaning the rock of thundering drums, so is the name of the Gulang islet.
