Originally
built by the British in 1863, the New World Astor
Hotel, is a great four star old colonial hotel.
It is built overlooking the river and has housed
many visiting notables, including US President
Herbert Hoover. Although expanded in 1924 and
1987, this hotel is still a place for people who
like history, the old building still an impressive
sight, as are the English plaques on the walls
and the stunning lobby mural. It is also in a
fairly good location on the river for a walk around
the various concessionary areas, and even in walking
distance of the shopping areas around Binjiang
dao.
The
best of the 223 rooms here have to be the 94 big
rooms in the charming old wing. The other sections
have standard rooms, suites and an executive floor.
Despite some old surroundings, the rooms are all
fairly well equipped, with satellite TV, air conditioning,
minibar, IDD telephone and in-room safes. Non-smoking
rooms are also available.
